Covid-19 Omicron outbreak: 22,152 new Covid community cases, 405 people in hospital
NZ Herald 2 Mar, 2022 12:40 PM..Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has addressed the "misinformation and conspiracy theories" among protesters as NZ recorded a record 22,152 new community cases of Covid-19 today. Ardern says the protesters had been given ample opportunity to go. The protest has been at times been violent and fuelled by misinformation and conspiracy theories." It had also turned into a Covid-19 super spreader.
The new community cases are in Northland (382), Auckland (13,231), Waikato (2,139), Bay of Plenty (1,270), Lakes (415), Hawke's Bay (273), MidCentral (367), Whanganui (56), Taranaki (261), Tairāwhiti (137), Wairarapa (91), Capital and Coast (1,115), Hutt Valley (473), Nelson Marlborough (272), Canterbury (1,033), South Canterbury (36), Southern (578), West Coast (15). NSW firefighters battle warehouse blaze
01/03/2022...More than 100 firefighters have been sent to a warehouse fire in Newcastle as crews try to stop the blaze spreading to a nearby fuel terminal. Fire and Rescue NSW says the "mega warehouse blaze" broke out about 2.30pm on Tuesday, with residents of nearby streets evacuated.
Thirty fire trucks were sent to the four-storey building on Annie St at Wickham in Newcastle's inner suburbs and workers were evacuated from the building as the flames took hold. Crews are also monitoring and protecting an adjoining fuel terminal.
An exclusion zone has been set up around the former wool store while electrical and gas utilities are isolated and firefighters try to prevent the blaze from spreading. Police were also on the scene evacuating nearby residents on Annie St, Milford St, The Avenue and Robert St. Click here AAP

Steroid dealer 'Dr Phil' died with a heart three times heavier than normal
Blair Ensor 05:00, Mar 02 2022 A former bodybuilding champ dubbed Dr Phil, who was the kingpin of one of the country’s largest steroid dealing syndicates, died during the first Covid-19 lockdown with a heart that weighed nearly three times heavier than normal.
Phillip James Musson, 51, was found slumped face down over a quad bike at a property he and his wife rented in Little River, south of Christchurch, on April 18, 2020. Police said at the time his death was unexplained, but not suspicious.
A coroner’s report, obtained this week by Stuff, reveals Musson, also known as Liam Phillip Gunn, had consumed a cocktail of drugs - methamphetamine, MDMA (ecstasy) and anabolic steroids - which resulted in him dying of a heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.Click here stuff-news

Police vow to clear Wellington protest no matter how long it takes
NZ Herald 2 Mar, 2022 01:42 PM Police have vowed to clear the large anti-vaccine, anti-mandate protest that has occupied Parliament for the last three weeks, no matter how long it takes. Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said on Wednesday police "will continue this operation until it's completed".
He said the crowd has become focused on confrontation, and order needs to be restored to Wellington.That includes clearing streets and removing tents. Forklifts are being used to scoop up trucks and tents, and infrastructure such as portaloos and toilets have been removed too.
Fifteen vehicles have been towed and seized and "will not be returned in the immediate future" Coster said. It comes after a long morning of violent clashes between police and protesters in which 36 people were arrested, dozens of vehicles were towed and three police officers were injured. Poison in wine believed to be behind Northland man's death - police
02/03/2022...By Mike Dinsdale. Northland police have launched a homicide investigation after their enquiries revealed a Far North man had been fatally poisoned from a bottle of wine left in his letterbox. Police are appealing to the public for information following the suspicious death of 67-year-old David Davan in December last year.
The Herekino local died in Auckland Hospital on December 9 after becoming unwell in November. Davan's death was initially treated as unexplained. However, further police enquiries uncovered a more sinister explanation - he had been poisoned.
Police determined he had consumed poisoned wine from two bottles that had been left in his letterbox. An examination revealed only one of the bottles contained poison.They believed the bottles were likely placed in Davan's letterbox on Puhata Rd sometime in early November 2021, Click here NZ-herald news

Covid-19 hits Countdown with almost 1000 staff off, while operations shift to cope
Nearly 1000 Countdown staff are off work because of Covid-19 and the company says that means it is having to change how it operates - and what's on the shelves may change, too. Staff are either isolating because they are infected or are a household contact, with staffing at the two distribution centres in Auckland down 45 percent while stores in the city have about 10 percent of workers away.
The company said it was expecting the number of affected employees to grow and that many of its suppliers, growers and manufactures had also been hit, with a particular impact on butchers, forklift and truck drivers.
There have been gaps on supermarket shelves with some stores running low on toilet paper, potato chips and frozen food. Countdown corporate affairs, safety and sustainability Kiri Hannifin said the key thing is that there was plenty of food and groceries to go around. Click here RNZ news

Budding hip hop dancers strut their stuff at Projekt Feel Good 2022
by Anauli Karima Fa'i fa'i.. JANUARY 29, 2022 Hip hop has inspired Pacific youth for decades but a Pasifika-run dance event called Projekt Feel Good is breaking down barriers. The event is a collaboration between the Projekt dance collective and the Do Good Feel Good (DGFG) movement.
Organiser Mele Taeiloa says it’s a rare opportunity for enthusiasts from different styles of hip hop dance to come together in a non-competitive environment. I think coming away from competition and being in an environment where we’re not staring each other down and competing is honestly just a way of connecting,” she says.
MC Renee Sharp who is also a member of the dance trio ‘Two and Half Brownies’ says, the event also makes hip hop dance more accessible for struggling communities. SAS witness questioned about memory loss

The special forces soldier codenamed Person Four on Tuesday in the Federal Court was formally excused by Justice Anthony Besanko from answering questions about a 2009 mission dubbed Whiskey 108.The fresh trooper at the time is accused of shooting a prisoner under orders in effect to "blood the rookie.
But after objecting that he did not want to "self-incriminate," it was accepted the evidence risked further prosecution by the International Criminal Court and was not pressed. To manage The Ache Tour safely within the Government’s Covid-19 red light restrictions she will perform in front of a limited number of audience members who hold vaccine passes. I've unfortunately had a few festival shows cancelled due to the red light restrictions,’’ Paterson said.
We will be asking people to be seated and spaced out. I've changed my set also to work well for an intimate, seated show. Her first tour will showcase the tracks on her debut EP, Ache. Global hacking group Anonymous launches ‘cyber war’ against Russia

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a Twitter post from an account named "Anonymous" — with 7.4 million followers and nearly 190,000 Tweets — summoned hackers around the world to target Russia.
A post from the account on Feb. 24 stated the loosely connected global group was gearing up for action against the country — "and we will be retweeting their endeavors," it said. NZ ranked sixth least affordable country to buy a house - report
Priscilla Dickinson 02/03/2022..New Zealand is the sixth least affordable country to buy a house, according to a new report. A 2022 Global Cost of Property Report, released by Compare the Market, shows New Zealand housing is less affordable than 32 other countries, including the UK, Australia and Canada.
Ranked as sixth least affordable, the report shows New Zealand's 'affordability ratio' (the cost per square metre as a percentage of income), is 17.8 percent. It's based on an average property price per square metre of US$4461 (NZ$6602)*, and an average post-tax household income of US$25,074 (NZ$37,110)**.
Applying the same metrics to each country, the report shows the UK is the eighth least affordable. It's followed by France, Denmark and Australia, shown as 11th least affordable. With an affordability ratio of 16.2 percent, Compare the Market spokesperson Hannah Norton told Newshub Australians are in a slightly better position than Kiwis. Click here News-hub

Gordon Elliott's Cheltenham team 'bigger than ever' a year on from "moment of madness"

Elliott, who has one of the favourites for this year's Gold Cup, served a six-month ban after a photo emerged of him sitting on a dead horse. He admits that a year on from what he called a "moment of madness", he did not think he would be heading to Cheltenham with such numbers.

Four-day work weeks: The countries in Asia that are open to it — and the ones that aren't
Charmaine Jacob 02/03/2022..A new survey shows advanced economies in Asia are showing a willingness to adopt a four-day work week. It showed employees in Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia are keen to try working shorter weeks.
But interest was much lower in nations such as Myanmar, Malaysia and Cambodia, where many workers hold blue-collar jobs. Having a work-life balance is a growing priority for many workers.

02/03/2022..A sheep in suburban Christchurch is doing its bit to show just how smart a sheep can be. Leaping a jump is just one of 29 commands Lucky can follow. Lucky, who is six years old, and originally from a farm in Burke's Pass in South Canterbury, knows a few tricks.
In fact, he knows so many tricks that his owner Caroline Thomson needs a list to keep track of them all. He does sit, bow, turn, back, shake, stay, jump, pose, pose is his favourite, through, so that's when he'll go under something, wait, go to bed. Now go-to-bed he learnt by getting feijoas, feijoa is his most favourite food.
If you give him a feijoa it's instant," Thomson said. In total, Lucky can follow 29 commands. When Thomson first got him she noticed he would often sit next to her, so decided to see if he would do it on command.
